How do you set the timing on a 1997 Chevy Blazer?
My fiance has a 1996 GMC Jimmy. The engine blew a couple of months ago, and we got an engine that my dad had laying around that he took out of a 1997 Chevy Blazer. We did the engine swap, and now the truck is making some noise, but it just won't start all of the way. We think it's the timing and we did something wrong when putting the distributor back in. So how do we set the timing?
Oh, and the engines from both the 1996 GMC Jimmy and the '97 Blazer are identical.
first you need to re align distributor to Top dead center with the number 1 cylinder on this engine. I think the number 1 cylinder is the drivers side the first one facing towards the front of the engine. If this is not Done and this is a TBI type engine the Fuel spray timing will be off.
Then Find the single wire you need to disconnect to prevent the ECM from controlling the timing so you can set it. This will be near the distributor or on the passenger side firewall under a black protective cover. Then set it to 15 to 20 degrees after TDC by pointing the timing light at the crankshaft pulley while the engine is running. Make sure you use the number 1 cylinder to time it. which is the one on the drivers side facing towards the front of the truck. Remember to plug in the single wire to let the ecm take care of the advancing the timing.
