How many synthetic motor oil types are there?
Red Line extolls their polyol ester-based oils as being the best, but I understand that other makers, such as Mobil, Pennzoil, Castrol, et al, use bases other than polyol. Can anyone out there fill in some of the blanks as far as what's available, and the pros & cons of the various synthetics out there? I know that polyols are hygroscopic, but I don't see that as a problem as a hot running engine should boil off any moisture that accumulates when not running.
The engine is a Chevy 454 pulling a heavy motormome, with a life-expectancy of 80-100,000 miles using petroleum-based oil.
Redline is ester based...... great at cleaning and keeping clean, cold flow and high heat protection...
Mobil one PAO based....( Poly-Alpha-Olefin ) great at keeping clean, great at cold flow as it has natural volume index improvers.. and great high heat protection
Amsoil..... same as mobil (they get they're oil from mobil as well)
Pennzoil platinum EOP based....(Ethylene - alpha - Olefin Polymers) basically a cheaper pao
Quaker state Group 3 hydrocracked petroleum... highly refined petroleum....ok at heat protection, cleanliness, and ok cold flow.
Castrol syntec mostly group 3 hydrocracked petroleum...
royal purple mostly pao....
Valvoline at last heard.... mostly pao...., but were mostly group 3
